Left is current layout. Measurements are all close enough for government work

I’ve been thinking about a bathroom remodel for years. Slowly but surely, a plan has been forming. Here are some of the key elements.

Shower only. I don’t use the current bath, and I don’t care about potential resale or code issues that may come about from not having a tub.

No threshold between the shower and the rest of the bathroom. I like the clean look. Plus I could just float the entire bathroom floor and go with a single type of tile for everything.

I’d like to put up a full-height partition wall to sepperate the shower area from the rest of the bathroom. No door. No glass. Likely tile the exterior of the partition wall in the same stuff as the interior of the shower.

Tile-wise, I’m thinking large format dark tile, or potentially some kind of stone if I can find something I like, that I can acquire cheaply. I want the entire bathroom dark, with warm mood lighting of some sort. Maybe recessed led strips, maybe Edison bulbs. Whooooo knows.

For the wall opposite the shower, I want to try doing a different, smaller format tile, using various different colors to smoooooothly transition from the black used in the other shower walls, to a dark blue. Think this, but uniform geometric tiles and much darker color pallette.

Kinja'd!!!

Quick, not at all to scale sketch.

Kinja'd!!!

Everything in the bathroom currently will need to be torn out, to the studs. There’s definitely some water damage, and I want a solid foundation to build from. I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to do plumbing wise being that I live in the middle floor of an apartment building, but... I guess I’ll find out! It would be nice to switch to a linear drain, especially with no threshold.

While I’m like you and never use a bathtub for baths, I also will never own a house that doesn’t have at least one bathtub beside a toilet, because the stomach flu is a bitch and having them in close proximity makes cleanup easy.

That’s something I’ve never had to deal with. Now excuse me while I go find some wood to knock on for a few hours

More and more homeowners have stopped caring about bathtubs, so it’s not such an issue anymore. When my kid was little, we just bathed him in a plastic tub inside the shower. As for old people, eh, eff em.

I like your ideas and it seems that it will work well in the small space. Be aware that some may find your color choice and the design to be a bit locker-room-like. If you pick good finishes, you’ll be alright.

It’s far from perfect because I did it myself. But it works, and it seems a bit more open. I also added a sliding door vs. a swing door because it is such a small space. Gave me room for a little bigger sink.

The girlfriend wanted the jet tub, I wasn’t a fan.  She is gone now, tub remains.

Only reason a Bathtub would be needed is if you have kids.

I think the bathtub is for vomiting in while you're on the toilet...

Why not use a glass partition wall? You wouldn’t have to have a door, and would benefit from the extra space and light vs a stick wall.

The shower without a threashold or door is not a good idea, unless you don’t mind you’re entire bathroom being sprayed with water from every shower. We had a shower, sans door for a week or so and it was awful. No matter how hard you try to keep the water in, it sprays out even with the partial wall idea you have going there. I’d opt for a full glass door and fixed glass panel where you have the regular wall shown. That will give light in the shower.

The threashold doesn’t have to be much, but you can use a shower pan system like what schluter makes as part of their Kerdi waterproofing system, that has a good slope to drain and if you have a door, you shouldn’t get much water out of the shower area. But if no door, you may want a small threashold to keep the water at bay.

Otherwise, yeah go for it.  We have a master bath with a tub and shower and we could do without the bath.  My parents went that route as well, no tub and did a walk in shower.  Works great.

Actually I’d think old people want a shower with a lower step in height, vs a bathtub.

Yeah and even then, you can get by with a big kitchen sink for up to about 3 months, then a seat in a shower would do the trick after that, till they can stand.  Now all my boys shower, baby girl still gets a bath though.  But if you had to make it work, you could.

I’d love a tub, but it needs to be big enough to actually soak in, not the standard tub’s “either you chest/shoulders or you legs/knees gets to be cold!”. Don’t think there’s room for that here. Standard tubs seem bad for everything but kids.

Also, yeah that step-in height, I was lucky to be in a two bath apartment with a shower in one when I sprained my MCL, because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to shower for days.

my 3 and 5 year old could pass the day in the bath if we would let them.

or 14 month year old loves taking baths too.

But I have 2 bathrooms, one with a bath and the other a big walk i n shower.

We have 4 kids so...

Not a fan of the partition wall unless you move the toilet behind it and just have a small corner shower where the toilet is. You’d be making a small space even more cramped. Better to go with glass for the partition (think of the Zoidbergs!).

In any event, you could do worse:

This. If I had a space big enough for a decent sized tub, I might do things differently.

I'm considering a small threshold, I know how hard it is to keep water in. Or I could build the entire bathroom floor as a shower pan and just not worry about water getting anywhere

B ecause tempered glass is supah expensive, I want experience building a wall, and.... For stylistic reasons I don't want the extra light. Losing the tub should net me extra shower width even with a wall, as the tub sides were 5 inches thick on each side

I wish I had two bathrooms so I could do two different styles. It’s going to be cramped regardless, but I think I can make it work well if I take my time messing with the layout.

I would love a nice 1/2" piece of glass... But it doesn't really fit well with the design I want. I wish my HOA would let me install glass deck railings...

did a full gut, re-wire, and replumbed the whole house . My rainy day fund is still recovering.  But the addition of a vent fan and the rainshower head are quite enjoyable.

Oh yeah, there’s some real doozies out there. I hate it because when they fuck up real bad and now the customer’s glass design won’t work, I have to tactfully imply — but also deflect — blame from shoddy tilists.

Yeah is too. Four kiddos under 6. The boys are 3-6 and they’re content with showers mostly, they do like the jacuzzi tub but only because they like to get the water just below the jets so it sprays everywhere. My youngest boy will still do baths too, but that’s if he sneaks in with his sisters bath. Otherwise it’s all showers. We have a bathtubs in two of our bathrooms but rarely use the one in our master. Other than the novels for the boys to blow water all over the bathroom, it doesn’t see much use. Maybe one day when they’re out of the house, but for now... ain’t nobody got time for that! .

Once they transitioned to showers it was very nice, as they don’t require the level of supervision vs a bathtub full of water.

That kerdi underlayment system is really nice, but expensive.  You could waterproof the whole bathroom and cover it in tile and you’d be all set.  Just hose the whole place down if necessary.  That’s probably the one thing I would change with ours, I’d add more tile walls adjacent to the showers and baths.  That way we don’t have to worry about the splashes and drywall walls with wood baseboard.  Still not bad, but if the kiddos get silly, you have to clean up pretty quickly so nothing gets water damaged.

Current thought process is a dry pack pre-float, that gets waterproofed with red gaurd or something simmilar . Schluter shower pan liner above that, likely going up two feet of wall. Waterproof foam board on the walls covering the liner. Final dry pack float that also gets a waterproof paint coating, and.... Then tile. Lots of redundancy, but man I do not want to deal with water damage.

It would take a while, but I don’t dislike the idea of doing that to the whole bathroom. Kinda depends on what I do for the vanity, and how janky the walls are.

Guy who framed the home I’m working on told me he threw out all his levels because—and I quote—”levels lie, just go by measurements and everything will line up perfectly”. Wanna take a guess how perfectly everything lined up?

We should meet up at a brewery sometime. I’d love to hear more about this fancy s ee-though stuff you work with

Yeah, water leaks are not fun. And well worth the effort to avoid on the front end. In the end you won’t remember the time effort or cost that went into it, but not having to dick around fixing things later will put you way ahead. I used the schluter underlayment in my kitchen instead of thick set or cement board, and it was great to use. The Kerdi system is just that underlayment Mat with joint taping to get you waterproof. That underlayment cost more than the tile and mortar. Not cheap, but I let my bathroom guy do the cement board in our baths and wish I hadn’t. Should’ve just bit the bullet and went with the Kerdi product. He did nice for the showers though cement board and red guard on walls and a membrane thickset and Redguard for the  shower pans.
